Ink serves crucially to CISS. Problems existing with the inks used by other CISS on the market are mainly include the following:

1. Printer in various models uses the so-called all-purpose ink;

2.use the ink of the ink cartridge as that of CISS.

As a matter of fact, epson has adopted many kinds of different inks for its printers.

As the printing precision is improved, printing head puts higher and higher requirements for ink. When ink fails out of the requirement of printer, plugging and printing head ageing will occur. For printer users, this is a lethal strike.

As the ink cartridge and printing head of printer is separated, its printing head is very durable, the printing head is the major part of printer with very precious price, some amount to two third or even twice of the price for printer.

At present, the ink used in other CISS in the market mainly have two sources:

(1) purchase virgin pulp to mix.

(2) substitute with ink of the ink cartridge.

Except for its vivid colors and striking observation, the ink mixed with the virgin pulp cannot satisfy the requirements of printer.

Compared to the ink of the ink cartridge, the requirement for the ink of CISS is much higher because the ink will stay shortly inside the ink cartridge after the ink cartridge is unpacked, while the ink of CISS will stay for a long time inside the ink cartridge, so the requirement of it is higher for the potential of hydrogen, light fastness and consistency of the ink of CISS.

At present, ink becomes the most crucial factor that restricts the development of CISS, and will result in such problems as undesired printing effect, jet head plugging, printing head corrosion, facilitated ageing of printing head for the following causes:

(1) Ink will erode the metals inside the ink cartridge. The filter screens and springs inside ink cartridge are made from metals, long-term soaking of them will cause chemical equation with ink. In the early period, it will occur color cast, recurring killed lines and jet nozzle plugging generally within 1-3 month. Upon such problems, the users usually clean the jet head and remove the small bubbles or foreign substances blocking the water outlet of ink cartridge, but killed lines will recur after having printed out a few pages of pictures, such case will repeat frequently.

(2) Corrosion of the superficial coating on the printing head. It will make it impossible to effectively control the sizes and directions of ink drops jetted, leading to the roping printing quality and the ink with strong acidity will age the printing head within one month, the traced ink will cause evident ageing within 3-6 months with the following signs:

a. illegible words;

b. Bars appear;

Deflecting spray will occur during jet head testing, and it will not disappear by jet head calibration. The bars or flashes (similar to burrs) will appear during image printing. (Just like the case shown in blue in the following chart)
